The License Points System in Pennsylvania
When you plead guilty of a traffic violation by paying a fine, your driver’s license accrues points. Some tickets are worth as little as two points, while others can result in a maximum five points.
Common traffic violations include:
- Speeding
- Running red lights
- Hit and run
- Cellphone tickets
- Reckless driving
If you accrue six points, you must take a written exam. If you pass the test within 30 days, two points will be taken off your record. If you cannot pass the test within a 30-day period, your driver’s license will be suspended until you pass.
If you reach six points for a second time, you are required to attend a hearing. An administrative judge will determine whether you must retake the test or suspend your driver’s license for up to 15 days.
Your driver’s license is automatically suspended for five days if you accrue 11 points. A second offense leads to a 10-day suspension, while a third offense lasts 15 days. Any subsequent time you accumulate 11 points, your driver’s license will be suspended for one year.
